Step back in time and journey along the Saba Kaidō, the historic “Mackerel Road” that once connected the bustling port town of Obama on the Sea of Japan with the cultural heart of Kyoto. For centuries, this route carried fresh seafood—especially mackerel—over the mountains to the ancient capital, where it became an essential part of Kyoto’s cuisine.
Today, travelers can still go by bike parts of this atmospheric trail, surrounded by tranquil forests, charming villages, and scenic mountain passes. Along the way, you’ll encounter traditional inns, shrines, and glimpses of everyday life that feel unchanged for generations.
Whether you’re a history lover, a biking enthusiast, or simply seeking a deeper connection with Japan’s cultural heritage, the Saba Kaidō offers a unique chance to follow in the footsteps of merchants and travelers from long ago—while enjoying breathtaking landscapes and authentic local flavors. Embark on the Saba Kaidō, and experience a journey where history, nature, and tradition meet.
